A single public service is a bad idea

The workers are unhappy at the way they are being treated by their overpaid bosses. They should be - it's another move to centralise power.

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) came out strongly against proposed legislation on Friday for a single public service. The unions in the affected sectors had not been consulted, Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said in a statement.

Government and the public service and administration department were attempting to "unilaterally bulldoze workers in the sector" by making changes to the manner in which employees could be transferred and allocated without consultation and negotiation with them, Fedusa said.

Earlier this week, senior departmental officials briefed the National Assembly's public service and administration committee on Cabinet's decision to give the go-ahead to legislation to create a single public service for national, provincial and local governments.

George said government should improve on the services offered by all spheres of government in the first instance, instead of creating a "bloated" public service, which would not improve service delivery. "Government should address the non-performance of senior, well paid officials, stop spending money on consultants, and encourage workers to improve service delivery to the community.
